Crime Prevention Tips

    AT HOME

  • NEVER open your door automatically; install a security door, have deadbolt locks installed on all your doors and use a peephole;
  • NEVER let a stranger into your home;
  • NEVER give out information over the phone indicating you are alone or that you won't be home at a certain time;
  • LOCK your doors and windows (most burglaries involve unlocked doors and windows)
  • REPORT any theft (no matter how small), suspicious persons and activities to police;
  • ASK for proper identification from delivery people or strangers; don't be afraid to ask - if they are legitimate they won't mind;
  • BE WARY of unsolicited offers to make repairs to your home;
  • DON'T put notes on the door when going out;
  • DON'T hide your keys under the mat or in other obvious places;
  • DON'T GO INSIDE if you arrive home and suspect someone may have been inside; leave quietly and call the Police
  • WHEN WALKING

  • WHEN OUT WALKING, particularly early morning or evening, enjoy the walk with a friend;
  • KEEP your house and other keys inside your jacket or coat;
  • CALL 000 and report any incidents or unusual activities as soon as possible

  • SHOPPING

  • CARRY your handbag against you - don't hang it over your arm; never leave your handbag in a shopping trolley; never leave a handbag unattended
  • DON'T carry any more cash than is necessary
  • DON'T display large sums of cash.
  • IN YOUR CAR

  • ALWAYS keep your car doors locked, whether you are in or out of your car
  • NEVER pick up hitchhikers
  • TAKE YOUR KEYS with you, and lock your car when getting fuel
  • PLAN your route beforehand
  • LOCK your bag and valuables in the boot;
  • LOOK around for loiterers before you get out of your car
  • PARK in well-lit areas - near shops
  • BANKING

  • ALWAYS be vigilant when using an ATM - watch for people lurking behind or nearby
  • BE WARY of con artists with get-rich schemes that probably are too good to be true
  • REPORT suspicious persons to the bank
  • SHIELD the screen with your body to prevent others from seeing your PIN
  • REPORT any fears you may have that you have been swindled or conned to your local police and your bank
  • NEVER withdraw money from your bank accounts for anyone except yourself
  • REMEMBER - if you never report a crime the criminals are free to cheat others again and again - and you have less chance of getting your money or valuables back
